Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919),  list of works
Son of a Neapolitan policeman, Ruggero Leoncavallo drew on memories of one of his father's cases in order to write the libretto for his opera Pagliacci. Leoncavallo was determined that Pagliacci would be a success, and it was; however, none of his other operas met with equal acclaim. In one case, at least, he was the victim of bad timing: shortly before Leoncavallo finished his operatic adaptation of La bohème, Puccini's version took the world by storm.
