He did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its modern form. He is widely known for developing the Kelvin scale of temperature measurement. William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin was created Baron Kelvin in honour of his achievements, named after the river that flowed past his university in Glasgow, Scotland in the UK. The Kelvin temperature scale, where zero degrees Kelvin is approximately -459.67 °F on the Fahrenheit scale, essentially the point at which all motion of matter stops in thermodynamic terms, was named after its creator Lord Kelvin, and therefore derives its name from this very river.
He also enjoyed a second career as an telegraph engineer and inventor, a career that propelled him into the public eye and ensured his wealth, fame and honour. |
