Jan Vermeer (1632-1675),  list of works
Jan Vermeer achieved little success during his lifetime, died deeply in debt, and was forgotten for almost one hundred years before being rediscovered in the 19th century. His achingly sensitive and stunningly unique renderings of natural light in interior domestic spaces, combined with the uncertainty of his oeuvre make him one of the most studied painters in the academic canon. He has been credited with over 76 paintings at certain periods of time, but the current count hovers around 34, each one of them drawing travelers to the various museums that house them to witness the timelessness of Vermeer's appeal.
