Frederick Leighton

1830 - 1869

An English painter and sculptor who took his subjects from the realms of mythology and antiquity, Frederick Leighton traveled extensively throughout Europe and was greatly influenced by the Nazarenes in Rome before settling in London in 1859. Within five years he achieved considerable popular and academic success; he was able to afford a fine house, which quickly became a center of fashion and culture. Leighton's Aesthetic Classicism is often noted for its closeness to the Pre-Raphaelite school, and he shared close friendships with both Rossetti and Hunt, the movement's founders.
