Edmond Audran

1840 - 1901

Son of a comic-opera tenor from Lyons, Edmond Audran established himself at the age of twenty-one as a masterful church organist; however, it was his essays into his father's pet genre that would win him fame. One of Audran's early operas-bouffes came to the attention of an impresario from Paris, who promptly imported the composer and helped to establish him on the international opera scene. All the success did little for Audran's health, however; in the 1890s he suffered the nervous breakdown that ultimately led to his death.
